I am often asked by people (surprised that anyone can make a living as a freelance writer) how I find my clients. If a struggling writer himself or another owner of a business person looking to expand, usually surprised when I say that there is a good way to market their services, but dozens of them. Trust me: I got a job with all the methods described in this article. As a one person operation, has a number of advantages. Unlike large companies, there is no lack of communication to potential customers about what they can deliver because the engineering and marketing departments were not talking. Second is the increasingly fragile world of corporate America. Job security is really a thing of the past. Now, People are looking for new ways to supplement or replace there income.

Enter direct marketing.

Direct marketing is simply a business without the traditional overhead costs. There are no commercials and no rent for buildings, hence the term “direct” marketing. It is a word of mouth business, and all it requires is an army of well trained personnel and a corporate structure. The rest is hopefully a good product and huge profits for the entrepreneurial minded. So this begs the question, is direct marketing for you? It is not the corporate structure; it is the people who run the company. Every company is multi-level. In every company, the people at the top usually get more. However, in direct marketing it is very possible to surpass someone who was initially above you.

If you are driven and looking for a way out of the rat race, direct marketing could be the gift that you were looking for. A good company can take to places you never dreamed of. You must be responsible and independent, but the gold is there.

Should Eden Prairie Students Be Punished for Facebook Photos?

According to the Star Tribune, thirteen Eden Prairie High School students in Minnesota were disciplined after school authorities found world wide web pictures of the students drinking on Facebook. Was the school justified in punishing these students? My opinion is yes.

All of the students being punished for drinking had signed a contract, along with their parents, concurring to abstain from alcohol and other drugs while participating in a league-sanctioned activity.

sure the students signed this contract believing the school would never find out about their drinking. Obviously they had no intention of honoring their agreement, so they should have never signed the contract in the first place. They signed the contract, they broke that contract, so there should be consequences.

Also, in the State of Minnesota it is illegal for anyone under the age of twenty-one to drink alcohol. All of the students being punished are under the age of twenty-one. They are lucky that school officials were pulling them out of classes instead of police officers.

Punishment includes suspension from sports and other activities. Students at Eden Prairie High School report that students are receiving a two game punishment per incident. Any student who appears in multiple photos, with different outfits and surroundings, will have their punishment increased by two games per incident.

Some of the parents of these students are considering legal action against the school because they believe the school’s punishment is too harsh. According to Chuck Samuelson, the Executive Director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Minnesota, a 2002 court case deemed that after school activities are considered privileges, not rights. Therefore it doesn’t appear that the parents would have a case.

The fact that some parents are taking the side of their children, and not of the school, proves that these parents have forgotten that the role of a parent is to protect kids from things such as underage drinking. These parents must stop being their child’s friend and being a responsible parent.

The large concern of many parents is that their child will miss out on scholarship opportunities because of the suspension. But does a college really want to dish out thousands of dollars to someone who breaks contracts and the law? And then is cocky enough to brag about it by posting on Facebook? Call it a valuable lesson learned.

My only concern about punishing these students is the possibility that students could have been wrongly accused of drinking. Did the school administration investigate the photos thoroughly? Just because a student is holding a red cup doesn’t mean there is alcohol in the cup. And how old are the photos? What if someone signed the contract after the was taken? Perhaps that is why school officials called forty-two students in to be questioned and only punished thirteen of them.

Here’s a tip for all members of social networking sites: If you want your teachers, parents, boss, minister, college recruiter, or jealous teammates to see your personal information, stick to a good old-fashioned locked diary hidden under your bed. If you don’t, be prepared to face the consequences.

Users wont be able to opt out of seeing sponsored ads in their main news feed, and mobile news feed stories MAY be in the works for 2012 as well. It appears that a few sites from all walks of life such as Inside Facebook and TechCrunch have received confirmation from Facebook that these changes will appear, again, at the start of 2012.

There’s nearly certainly no way this action, in whatever set of forms it ends up showing up in, will receive heavy backlash from Facebook users and defectors alike. Facebook will be pushing this project as a value-added adventure where advertisers show off their awesome wares through your friends activities, much than traditional banner ads, for example. On the other hand, Sponsored Ads showing up too often in the main feed, no matter how relevant they are to our daily lives, will result in masses of users exiting the platform.

This isn’t the first step in Facebook’s efforts to turn your activities into advertisements, as you may have seen “Sponsored Stories” showing up on your right-hand sidebar for many months now (starting at the beginning of 2011.) This newest project is essentially the opposite of that, where instead of turning friends activities into ads up on the sidebar, sidebar ads will be showing up in your news feed. The difference between this and straight up dropping banners down in front of you is that these ads will be affected by your activity and perceived interests. Clicking ice cream sandwich pages will result in ice cream sandwiches.

Meaning – it depends on what mode of photography they choose, how much time they put into the business, do they have a commercial bent, are they more artistic than usual etc. All these points come into play when success in a photography business or studio is questioned.

I don’t want to create any false hopes by that last paragraph because success will require some hard work, tolerance and patience. These next thirty tips should help you along the way. There is more detail available on this subject matter at the link at the bottom of this page.

1. Always do some extensive research before starting out a career with your own photography business so that you understand the pros and cons involved. Some ideas include subscribing to a good magazine related to the photographic industry such as Professional Photographer, Camera Arts and Photo District News. Besides that, the internet is the biggest source of information and can provide you with a plethora of career opportunities or even more information on starting a photography business.

Ads can be placed on websites, online telephone directories, newspapers and magazines, etc. Research the right mediums before you rush in. Finally there was a break from the rainy weather yesterday. I wished for the sun but after days of gray, rainy weather; I was very happy to settled for a cloudy day. At least I can get out and shoot some fall colors. We took a road trip to Big Four mountain or also known as Big Four Ice Caves. I have never been there before so I was excited by the prospect of taking of ice caves. The trip was short. It took about an hour to get there from my house. As I stood in front of the majestic looking mountain peaks, I felt very grateful to be able to experience such beauty.

The elevation of the mountain is about 6,135 ft (1,870 m) and the ice caves are easily accessible with a short hike through the dense forest on a very well maintained trail.

On the way to the ice caves, I came a cross a nice tiny pond with the mountain reflection. I took a few shots. Unfortunately, the clouds were thick so the lighting condition wasn’t the for getting the bright fall colors I was looking for.

I didn’t like the dark clouds in the water. And decided to zoom in and use longer exposure to brighten the water.

The result was superior but overall, I still find the scene rather boring looking. So… I zoom in some more… all the way up to the maximum of the lens — which is 250mm. And when I looked into the view finder — something clicked in my creative brain. I was very excited by what I saw. The reflections from the vegetation and tree branches created an amazing array of colors, textures, and details. I knew this was the kind of shots that would get my creativity working.

As I was busy composing, I saw a trout jumped out of the water causing ripples to form. Unfortunately, I wasn’t enough to shoot the fish jumping but very glad the ripples changed the stillness of the water. I love the painterly feel the ripples created.

It took me over an hour to make the 1 mile hike to the ice caves. Hey… there were a lot of distractions along the way. And yes, I did take photos of the ice caves — but since it was too hazardous to go into the caves — the from the outside wasn’t too impressive. A black hole covered with dirty snow is about as attractive as the yellow snow.

Life have a way of creating opportunities when you least anticipate it. I certainly enjoyed the creative reflections in the pond.

Travel Destinations: Shaoxing, China

With a country as as China, there are so many places and attractions to visit. Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong are the most popular destinations in China, but there are other cities which offer just as much as these.

When travelling through Zhejiang Province, why not visit the wonderful town of Shaoxing. With a population of 4.3 million, it lies just 67km southeast of Hangzhou. It is a water town, a Chinese version of Venice, with its winding canals, arched bridges and historical buildings. The canals are still used today, but the town itself has undergone some modernization and lost some of that ancient Chinese romanticism that many western travellers fall in love with. Despite this, however, Shaoxing still has much to offer.

Shaoxing was the capital of the Yue kingdom from 770 to 211 BCE but has been an administrative and agricultural centre throughout history. Shaoxing has been the birthplace and home to some of the most important and vibrant figures from history, including the artist Xu Wei, the female hero Qiu Jin and China’s first great modern writer Lu Xun.

There are several great sights to visit here in Shaoxing. Take a trip to Lu Xun’s former residence. Lu Xun (1881 – 1936) is one of China’s greatest novelists, the author of ‘Diary of a Madman’ and ‘Medicine’. He was born and raised here until he was sent abroad to study. When he returned he taught at Guangzhou’s Zhongshan University and entombed in Shanghai. His home and buildings, known as the Lu Xun Zhonglu, are open to the public and here you can gain a sense of the man from these items.

Why not visit the Yingtian Pagoda. It was originally constructed during the Song dynasty and part of a temple but was destroyed during the Taiping Rebellion. It has since been rebuilt and stands on top of a hill, giving you some astonishing views of the city.

King Yu’s Mausoleum is another famous attraction. According to legends, Yu the Great became the first emperor of the Xia dynasty in 2205 BCE. He earned the name ‘tamer of floods’ as he was able to overcome the great dragons that caused floods. During the 6th century, a temple and mausoleum complex was built in his honour and over the long centuries, new features were added. It is located about 4km southeast of the city centre. It comprises the 24 meter high Main Hall, the Memorial Hall and the Meridian Gate. To get here, take the number 2 bus from outside the train station.

Shaoxing is a wonderful city, full of cultural attractions, great historic sites, divine restaurants and hotels to suit every budget.
